Lenten Formation

BOOK STUDY
Jesus’ final days were full of risk. Every move he made was filled with anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or great reward. Jesus risked his reputation when he entered Jerusalem in a victory parade. He risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His followers risked everything when they left behind their homes, or anointed him with costly perfume. We take risks as we read and re-read these stories, finding new meanings and new challenges.

In Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the Passion story. She shows us how the text raises ethical and spiritual questions for the reader, and how we all face risk in our Christian experience.

Join Mtr. Melesa on Tuesday evenings in Lent from 6:30-8:15pm or Wednesday from 10:30am-11:45am for a book discussion. We have ordered 12 copies of the book, and will have them available for $10 beginning this Sunday. Please email Mtr. Melesa to sign up.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
The Way of the Cross (also known as Stations of the Cross) is a devotion which recalls a series of events at the end of Jesus’ life from his condemnation to his burial. The Way of the Cross imitates the practice of visiting the places of Jesus’ Passion in the Holy Land by early Christian pilgrims. This devotion was encouraged by the Franciscans, and it became common in the fifteenth century.

During the season of Lent Audrey Reineck will be leading the liturgy for Stations of the Cross on Wednesday evenings at 6pm in the nave beginning February 25th.
LENTEN DEVOTIONAL
If you are looking for a way to walk through Lent with intention, we invite you to pick up a devotional booklet from Living Compass. Living Compass is a organization that, "Outfitting individuals, families, congregations, and organizations with tools and training for the journey toward wellness and wholeness." They offer a variety of materials for individuals and congregations, and this Lent's theme is Cultivating Healing and Wholeness with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind. From the devotional:

During many Ash Wednesday services, the Officiant will invite the participants to “the observance of a holy Lent.” Given that the words holy, whole, health, and healing all share a common root, this invitation aligns beautifully with our theme of Healing and Wholeness this year. The season of Lent is an ideal time to focus on healing and wholeness—for ourselves and for the world.

The booklets will be available in the church office and in the church.
